This stamp illustrates the biblical story of the Magi — three visitors from the East who followed a star to bring gifts to the infant Jesus. Guided by a large, dazzling star, the three kings are depicted atop decorated camels on a hill at dawn, as the sky shifts from rose near the horizon to a deep purple above.
Art director Greg Breeding of Charlottesville, VA, and illustrator Nancy Stahl of New York City collaborated to bring this traditional tale to life. Stahl first sketched the design in pencil, then scanned and colored it digitally to achieve a soft, airbrushed look. The stamp honors Three Kings Day, celebrated on January 6 in many Western cultures as the traditional day for gift-giving.
